<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;ve ever wondered what keeps grease in and dirt out in your equipment, the answer is simple: <strong>oil seals</strong>. These small yet powerful components are critical in preventing leaks, protecting bearings, and extending the life of your machinery. Whether you’re in automotive repair, industrial maintenance, or heavy-duty manufacturing, understanding oil seals is a must.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this casual guide, we’ll walk you through the basics—no engineering degree required—and help you pick the right seal for the job. And hey, if you already know what you need, feel free to <a href="https://rodavictoriausa.com/categoria-producto/oil-seals/">jump straight to our oil seal collection</a> and grab what you’re missing.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f6e0.png" alt="🛠" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> What Is an Oil Seal?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also known as <strong>shaft seals</strong>, <strong>rotary seals</strong>, or <strong>grease seals</strong>, oil seals are devices used to keep lubricants in and contaminants out. They’re most often found:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Between rotating and stationary components</li>

<li>Around shafts and bearings</li>

<li>In engines, gearboxes, and pumps</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without them, dust, water, or grit could enter your system—and that means faster wear, leaks, and expensive repairs. Not fun.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f9f1.png" alt="🧱" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Types of Oil Seals</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are several types of oil seals, and choosing the right one depends on your application. Here are the most common:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Single Lip Oil Seals</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These have one sealing lip and are perfect for simple applications where contamination risk is low.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Double Lip Oil Seals</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also called <strong>dual lip seals</strong>, they have a second lip to block external contaminants. Great for dirt-heavy environments.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. <strong>Cassette Seals</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Used in heavy-duty and off-road equipment, cassette seals have built-in wear sleeves for extra durability.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f4a1.png" alt="💡" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <strong>Pro Tip:</strong> Not sure which one you need? <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f529.png" alt="🔩" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> What Are Oil Seals Made Of?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Materials matter. Choosing the right rubber or metal can affect seal performance under heat, pressure, and chemical exposure.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>NBR (Nitrile)</strong> – Affordable, good for general-purpose sealing (oil, water, grease).</li>

<li><strong>Viton® (FKM)</strong> – Handles high temperatures and aggressive chemicals.</li>

<li><strong>Silicone</strong> – Great for extreme temperatures, but not for dynamic loads.</li>

<li><strong>PTFE (Teflon)</strong> – Very low friction, long life, used in precision applications.</li>

<li><strong>Metal Cases</strong> – Often steel or stainless steel to provide rigidity.</li>
</ul>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2705.png" alt="✅" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> We stock a variety of oil seals in <strong>NBR</strong>, <strong>Viton</strong>, and other materials—<a href="https://rodavictoriausa.com/categoria-producto/oil-seals/">browse them all here</a>.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f9f0.png" alt="🧰" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Where Are Oil Seals Used?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Oil seals are everywhere. If a machine has moving parts and needs lubrication, chances are there&#8217;s an oil seal involved.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common applications:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Automotive engines and transmissions</li>

<li>Industrial gearboxes</li>

<li>Agricultural equipment</li>

<li>Hydraulic systems</li>

<li>Home appliances (yes, even washing machines!)</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re a mechanic, technician, or DIY-er, you’ll eventually run into one.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2699.png" alt="⚙" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Choosing the Right Oil Seal</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s a quick checklist to help you pick the right one:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Shaft diameter</strong> – The size of the shaft the seal will go around</li>

<li><strong>Bore diameter</strong> – The housing diameter</li>

<li><strong>Seal width</strong> – The axial length</li>

<li><strong>Material compatibility</strong> – What fluid will it seal? At what temperature?</li>

<li><strong>Pressure and speed</strong> – Some seals can handle more than others</li>
</ol>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong>How to Identify Bearing Types by Their Part Numbers</strong></strong></h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When buying bearings, you’ve probably noticed long strings of letters and numbers on every product box or datasheet. While they might seem cryptic, these part numbers—or <strong>bearing codes</strong>—hold the key to understanding exactly what type of bearing you’re dealing with.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part.png" alt="bearings numbers" class="wp-image-124574" style="width:577px;height:auto" srcset="https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part.png 1024w, https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part-300x300.png 300w, https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part-150x150.png 150w, https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part-768x768.png 768w, https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part-600x600.png 600w, https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part-100x100.png 100w, https://rodavictoriausa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/part-64x64.png 64w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Learning how to <strong>decode these part numbers</strong> can help you:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Select the right bearing for your application</li>

<li>Save time during replacements</li>

<li>Avoid costly mistakes due to mismatched parts</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this article, we’ll show you <strong>how to read bearing numbers</strong> and what each section means.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">

</blockquote>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2705.png" alt="✅" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <strong>Why Do Bearings Have Part Numbers?</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Manufacturers like KOYO, SKF, NTN, and others follow standardized systems for bearing codes. These codes help:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Identify <strong>bearing type</strong> (e.g. deep groove ball, roller, needle)</li>

<li>Indicate <strong>dimensions</strong> (inner diameter, outer diameter, width)</li>

<li>Specify <strong>clearance</strong> (like C3 or C4)</li>

<li>Describe <strong>sealing type</strong> (rubber seals, shields, etc.)</li>

<li>Note <strong>precision level</strong> or special features</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you learn the logic behind these numbers, it becomes much easier to find the right bearing for any machinery or project.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2705.png" alt="✅" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <strong>The Basic Structure of Bearing Part Numbers</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s break down a typical bearing number:</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Example:</strong> 6303 2RS C3</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s what each part means:</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Bearing Series (First Digit or Two)</strong></h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The first 1–2 digits show the <strong>bearing type</strong> or series:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>6</strong> → Deep Groove Ball Bearing</li>

<li><strong>7</strong> → Single Row Angular Contact Ball Bearing</li>

<li><strong>2</strong> → Spherical Roller Bearing</li>

<li><strong>3</strong> → Tapered Roller Bearing</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So in <strong>6303</strong>, the “6” means it’s a deep groove ball bearing.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Dimension Series (Next Digit)</strong></h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The next digit indicates <strong>bearing robustness</strong> (the series):
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Light, Medium, Heavy</li>

<li>For example:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>0</strong> → Extra light</li>

<li><strong>2</strong> → Light</li>

<li><strong>3</strong> → Medium</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In <strong>6303</strong>, the “3” refers to a medium series bearing.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Bore Size (Last Two Digits)</strong></h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The last two numbers (usually multiplied by 5) give the <strong>inner diameter (ID)</strong> in millimeters.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Examples:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>“03” → 3 x 5 = 15 mm bore</li>

<li>“04” → 4 x 5 = 20 mm bore</li>

<li>“10” → 10 x 5 = 50 mm bore</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thus, in <strong>6303</strong>, “03” means a 17 mm bore (this is one exception where 03 = 17 mm instead of 15 mm).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Suffixes tell you about:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Seal type:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>2RS = Two rubber seals</li>

<li>ZZ = Two metal shields</li>

<li><strong>Clearance:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>C3 = Greater internal clearance than standard</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Precision:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>P5 = Higher precision</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Special features:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>NR = Snap ring groove</li>

<li>M = Machined brass cage</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In our example <strong>6303 2RS C3</strong>:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>2RS → Sealed on both sides with rubber seals</li>

<li>C3 → Greater internal clearance for higher speeds or temperature changes</li>
